SIMS Arts Residency

This series is titled Traces. It was created as part of a residency with The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (SÍM) in Reykjavik, Iceland. This interdisciplinary work involved research creation via creativity research, design research,  and artistic. A Trace is a delicate exchange where by the artist shares reflections about their creative process while working on it. The artist Monica Holl, was interviewed and asked about the objects that she uses both physical and mental models and how these objects and models inform their creative process. The artist was encouraged to share more abstract thoughts about creativity, experience and their perceptual relationship to materials and process. I reflected upon the qualitative data gathered and created these postcards. The words used on the back of the post cards are quotes, reflections or documentation of the event.

In this Trace with artist Monica Holl Series 1.0 describes her relationship to materials, the space, location and how she works through an idea.  Trace 1.2 relates more to memory, experience and creativity as an embodied activity. Trace 1.3 relates to repetition and mental models used as part of the creative act “the event or performance”.  Last in the series Trace 1.4 focuses on location (in this case Reykjavik), the unconscious, movement, energy and association. It describes more metaphysical aspects of a creative experience - language but also beyond what language can describe. This last postcard also depicts some the backdrop to our conversations and how this was also part of the event.  The final step of this work was turning the artwork into a design artifact and hopefully a future conversation. These postcards will now be sent to another artist across the world in New York.  Thanks -you to artist Monica Holl for her participation. The postcards we exhibited as part of a group show called "Tropical Iceland".
